Home floods due to water leaks can have cataclysmic effects, but you CAN do your best to prevent these disasters by installing a water alarm and or water leak detector.
Even the smallest of water leaks can cause significant damage to your property if they’re not caught in time – because often times flooding doesn’t typically hit all at once. Wouldn’t it be nice to know when a water leak starts so you can take care of it BEFORE any major damage is done? Water alarms and Leak Detectors to the rescue!
A water alarm is capable of detecting as little as 1/32” of water leaking within its sensor reach area. Water alarms work in a similar fashion to a smoke detector: they’re simply placed in a specific area of your home where a water leak is most likely to occur, (i.e. under sinks, in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, near water heaters etc…) and depending on the sensors radial reach — sometimes up to 6 feet — it will sound an alarm that can heard around the house if a water leak is detected.
Water alarms can be purchased at your local hardware store, or through a plumbing supply hardware store either in your local neighborhood or online. There are a variety of models available, some of which require little or no installation, and other more advanced models which you’ll want to enlist the help of plumbing expert to install.
Water leak detectors are available for purchase as single units, but the ideal set-up is a progressive model which allows for multiple sensors to be placed through out your home that communicate back to one main central device that is equipped with an automatic emergency shut-off device — so that in the event that a major leak is detected the water will shut-off immediately. These are paramount in preventing a flood disaster in your home, saving you hundreds and even thousands of dollars in potential water damage.
And if you’re really tech-savvy, you can even find some leak sensors that will communicate with your smart phone such this fun model by Insteon*. These can be especially handy if you travel or are frequently away from home as these devices can send you a text if a leak is detected so you’re aware and can take necessary precaution.
While water leak detectors offer a great solution to detect a leak and prevent the dreaded flooding of your home, be smart and call your local plumber to determine the root of problem and enlist their professional services to fix the issue at hand.
